FLINT, Mich. — The Flint City Bucks have re-signed prolific defender Hugo Bacharach for the upcoming USL League Two season, pending league and federation approval.
After his memorable debut season in Flint, teammates and coaches voted to recognize Bacharach with the 2022 Paul R. Scicluna Player of the Year Award. The annual honor recognizes the player who most exemplifies the Bucks’ winning mentality on and off the field.
“Hugo is one of the most talented young men I have ever had the pleasure and honor of coaching,” Flint City head coach Andy Wagstaff commented upon the award’s announcement. “He has an extremely charismatic personality off the pitch, yet he’s a fierce competitor on it.”
Bacharach helped the Bucks reach the USL2 playoffs for the 24th time in 27 seasons. The 6-foot-4 center back started 10 regular-season matches in which Flint City went 7-1-2 and held opposing teams to five goals. A constant aerial threat and dominant ball carrier, Bacharach also scored the match-clinching penalty kick in the USL Central Conference final against Des Moines.
On the heels of his junior season at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, the Spanish-born Bacharach was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He had previously been selected to the NEC all-conference first team for consecutive seasons.
A native of Benicàssim, Spain, he was a fixture in the back line of CD Castellón through the U-19 level. In that final stage, he helped his team reach the top of the Spanish amateur national league. Over one stretch, Castellón won 20 of 26 matches while allowing just 26 goals.
Bacharach also spent 10 years in the youth academy at Villarreal, considered one of the top clubs in Spain for both first-team accolades and youth development.
Flint City Bucks and Flint City AFC (women) season tickets are now available for 2023 and start at just $50 bucks for kids and $100 for adults! Join us this summer for elite men’s and women’s semi-professional soccer at Kettering University’s iconic Atwood Stadium. Purchase today at https://www.flintcitybucks.com/ticket.
